Woman’s Life passes decade mark

womens Womans Life passes decade markWoman’s Life is a Yorkshire-based independently owned magazine that was created with funding from the millennium commission. This year it is celebrating a decade since its first publication at the shelves. The magazine was first established by Dawn Marie French, who is the editor of the magazine, in 2001. This was after she conducted extensive research into what people in the Yorkshire region wanted to read. She also experimented with different formats and eventually settled on publishing in the A5 size.

The magazine currently boasts over 15,000 subscribers and it is published three times a year. The cost of subscriptions the magazine is £10 in the UK as it is slightly more expensive if you are based in the EU. For those who want to subscribe to the magazine and are based in the rest of the world the charge is £40 a year

Despite this additional cost for those who are based outside the UK, it is estimated that around 30% of the readers in the magazine based abroad. Most of them are people from Yorkshire who have moved abroad but want to remain in touch with news from their original local area.

Initially the magazine focused on news and issues but since then it has moved into writing travel features as well as lifestyle writing. They have said that this is due to changing consumer demand. When the magazine was first launched it was intended that it be a middle ground between celebrity and fashion news as at the time there was no real magazine targeting this niche in the market.

Ms French has commented, “Initially when we started the magazine it was a bit of a risk but I’m very glad to see that it is paid off for us, we are currently enjoying a great subscriber base and it looks like this is going to continue to expand for many years to come.” The magazine also has celebrity interviews, restaurant recommendations, and information and news about fashions on the high street.

Government still spending on magazines

magsof 300x168 Government still spending on magazinesRecent figures have announced that the foreign office and Ministry of Defence are continuing to spend a large amount on periodicals, trade magazines and newspapers. Official figures have shown that spending on these types of items is not falling despite massive cutbacks in the public sector.

Publicservice.co.uk has recently been told by the Ministry of Defence that it has reduced its spending by £200,000 this year. In the 2010 to 2011 period the organisation announced that it has spent nearly three quarters of a million pounds on journals and newspapers. Most of the money has been spent on magazines and periodicals with newspaper spending being just under £60,000. A spokesman from the Ministry of Defence has commented, “Spending on newspapers and magazines has fallen by around £200,000 compared with last year.

“These magazines that are subscribed to are required to deepen the knowledge of the people involved in government fields. They are kept for the Army library service, technical libraries, the defence’s medical service and also in recovery centres for personnel.”

The spokesman also said that now all departments within the Ministry of Defence are having to evaluate a need for different newspapers and periodicals on a yearly basis. David Lidington is the Foreign Office minister and he has recently said that the Foreign Office is spending even more than the Ministry of Defence, despite cutting spending by nearly 10%.

Every year it is estimated that the office spend over £2 million internationally on periodicals and newspapers. These figures will include electronics inscriptions. About the spending the minister recently commented, “We have partnered with other government departments so that we can benefit from greater purchasing power.”

Other government departments have recently reported that the amount they’ve been spending a magazines has been significantly cut. The children’s Minister has recently said that less than £70,000 a year is being spent on magazines and the business minister has said they are spending around £60,000. This is half of the amount of spending that was seen in the previous year.

One of the most dramatic reductions were seen at Defra were spending fell from £1.6 million to just over £300,000 in one year. A spokesperson from the Department has told publicservice.co.uk that the spending is high because of subscriptions online legal services and libraries. He commented, “Compared with other departments we have made significant cuts and the amount we’re spending is far lower than the previous government. We are trying to ensure long-term value for money by negotiating with those who provide our periodicals.”

Mike Freer a Member of Parliament for the Conservative party had recently challenged the government about its commitment to a reduction in spending that it promised before it was elected. A revelation before Mr Freer began questioning the government was that the number of Blackberry devices and mobile phones being issued to various government departments seemed extremely high. The government responded with these figures as a way to show that they are committed to reducing government spending.

Electronic magazine reading increasing but slowly

The Apple iPad was introduced in 2010 and since that time it has meant that many more people are reading magazines on digital devices. A recent study has shown that the number of people using these devices to read magazines is steadily growing although this is happening at a rather slow rate.

The study involved over 1000 adults and examined their reading habits. Interestingly, 9/10 of them said that since they had bought an iPad, the amount of time they spend reading had actually increased. The survey also showed that those who are using the device to read magazines are enjoying the experience, much like they would if it were in print.

Those who were surveyed said that the digital medium was encouraging them to read more than they had when they were buying their books and magazines in print format. Nearly 70% of them said that they intended to read more in the near future.

However, the survey also showed that people still enjoy reading print magazines and subscribing to them is still popular with nearly 80% of the people involved in the survey. The survey also showed there is a clear demand for back issues of magazines to be made available on the digital format. Many people believe that printing is one of the few industries that has been left behind in the digital revolution and a large proportion of the market still want to read things in print rather than on a computer.

Dakota and Elle Fanning in W Magazine

annings 300x226 Dakota and Elle Fanning in W MagazineDakota and Elle Fanning are two of the most famous siblings in Hollywood and both have talent and beauty. The two teenagers have recently been working together on a pictorial for a new edition of W Magazine where they are talking about boys and their careers. In the image, both siblings look ethereal and glowing as they appear on the front of the magazine.

The photographs were taken by Mario Sorrenti and show the two sisters in a great many pictures that tell a story about their relationship together. In the interview that goes along with the pictures the younger sibling, Elle talks about how her relationship with her sister changed now that she has left for college. Dakota is most famous for starring in the War of the Worlds movie.

Elle commented in the interview, “We don’t always get along but it is very different now that she has left our house in California, her room is empty and all of her clothes are gone, I can no longer borrow her outfits.” About her recent appearance in the Super 8 film she commented how she was mocked by the boys in her class because she had to act that she likes another boy in the movie.”

In the interview Dakota Fanning was asked about her decision to go to college, “I wanted to go to college because it is something that I hear people talking about a lot, I didn’t want to miss out on being a part of it. My acting career can wait while I finish my education.” She also revealed that her living situation will be a little different from most college students as her mother will be living in a house with her at the start.

She commented, “It is great to have my own place, in Los Angeles I have to share everything with my sister and now for the first time I have some space to myself. When sharing a house it seems that nothing is ever really yours but now I can have my own things.”

Dakota has said that she is trying to keep herself grounded despite becoming so famous at such a young age, however an advert she has recently starred in has been banned in the UK because the advertising regulators said it sexualises a child. The advert was for perfume created by Marc Jacobs.

The advert appeared in the American magazine ‘Oh Lola,’ where she actually looks younger than she is, has been allowed to be printed in the United States. She is pictured sitting on the floor and she is holding a perfume bottle between her thighs.

In the UK however the Advertising Standards Authority said, “The position of her legs as well as the length of the dress and the location of the perfume bottle in the picture draw attention to her in a sexual way.” The authority recognised that she is 17 but that in the advert she appears younger and childlike.

Mirror magazines take on Google Apps option

mirror Mirror magazines take on Google Apps optionTrinity Mirror, the company that owns the Mirror newspapers has almost completed its migration to Google Apps for Business. Mirror newspapers, which publishes magazines and newspapers has recently become a part of the software-as-a-service collaboration Suite having been unable to maintain its e-mail platform effectively in-house.

It will use a great range of features from the suite which includes document processing, calendars, email, and file sharing. It is expected that the company’s internal processes will be sped up and innovation and teamwork will be encouraged. It is expected that this change will affect all 6500 members of staff.

Trinity Mirror’s IT director is Steve Walker and he has said they first looked at changing to the system a few years ago, “That was not the right time however and we spent a while doing research and looking at our current platform and making upgrades. When we looked at upgrading the system again this year we knew it would be impossible to compete with the SaaS service and this meant we had to change the way that we do business.”

Many companies agree that what Google can offer to companies now has matured a great deal and Mr Walker continued, “Several of our competitors had already embraced the technology and we knew it was about time that we did the same.”

The application suites that Google provides are currently being used by the Guardian and Telegraph newspapers as well as the television company ITV. About the cost advantages Mr Walker said, “With this package from Google you only pay for what you need so if we were to acquire another company it would be very easy to use more of the service from Google and predicting the costs of such an increased use is very simple.”

When transitioning to the new system Google advises that the company train certain staff so that they can help others with the transition. Many companies who’ve made the transition have said that it has been met very favourably within their companies because people are familiar with the Google interface already.

Google also advise that the migration to their system is made as quickly as possible as most problems occur when there are compatibility issues with a pre-existing system. It will also mean that staff can discover what Google apps is capable of much faster and mean they can get back to work quickly.

Woman’s Weekly a century of publication

womans Woman’s Weekly a century of publicationOn November 4th Woman’s Weekly turned a century old, but what is more astounding is that the magazine first was offered for just a penny.  Edition one was full of little stories and advice that captivated women back then, so to help celebrate the anniversary here are just a few titbits from the first issue.

Included in the “Real Love Stories” section was the story of an East London man that fell in love with his wife while she was an attendant of a crippled lady that was wheeled around in a bath chair and wrote that it was her good heart that helped him to fall in love with her.

Also included is a segment in which Mary Common offered her husband control of the housekeeping budget after he was angered by the grocery bill she ran up for the week. She had a good rant about how he wanted her to clean the home and cook just like a servant but wasn’t  trusted to use the money wisely so she told him to do his own housekeeping.

Another feature in the first issue was an interview with the Matron of London’s Prince of Wales Hospital, Margaret Fox, who seemed to be on a nursing recruitment drive as she stated that every woman has the divine instinct to help relieve suffering, and any woman that has had the chance to do so during an emergency will be able to see that there is no better job out there in the world.  She added that caring for the ill is the most pleasant and gratifying career choice in the world and very rewarding.

IMC bring together BBC magazines

a1 300x93 IMC bring together BBC magazinesA new company has been created called Immediate Media Co (IMC) which will be headed by Stephen Alexander, the former chairman of EMI (Electronic and Musical Industries) as well as Odeon Cinemas.

According to Alexander, the move will bring BBC’s top magazine titles together with other special interest publications, as well as a wide digital platform.

Exponent, a private equity firm that invests in UK-based businesses, bought BBC Worldwide’s magazine business a couple of months ago for £121.  The sale included 33 titles, with all of the non-BBC-branded titles purchased outright and publishing rights to branded titles including the highly popular mags ‘Top Gear’ and ‘Radio Times’.

IMC is the entity Exponent will use as the umbrella for its publishing assets which include not only the BBC’s magazine titles but those belonging to Origin, a specialist publisher based in Bath with over a dozen titles such as  ‘Blonde Hair’, ‘Koi’, ’220 Triathlon’ and ‘Perfect Wedding’.  IMC also owns Magicalia, another publisher with a variety of titles that include topics like parenting, outdoor activities and motorcycles.

The chief executive of Magicalia, Tom Bureau, will now become the chief executive of IMC, with Alexander as chairman.  BBC Worldwide will continue to take a “strong editorial interest” in its branded titles such as ‘BBC Wildlife’ and ‘Gardeners’ World’.  A few other branded titles including ‘Top Gear’, ‘Radio Times’ and ‘Lonely Planet’ will still be owned by BBC Worldwide but published by Exponent.

When the deal with BBC Worldwide and Exponent was announced back in August, John Smith, chief executive of BBC Worldwide, said that the ‘takeover’ was the best way for the magazines to continue on a “path of success”, while BBC Worldwide could focus more directly on international video and digital offerings.  He noted that the magazine industry in general is struggling to survive in the digital age, and that Exponent can support then more fully than BBC Worldwide was equipped to do.

Exponent director Richard Lenane remarked that BBC Worldwide is the kind of enterprise that his company’s investors look for, specifically one with “strong growth potential and great people”.  Now that the Office of Fair Trading has given final approval to the transaction, all the noted restructuring will take place and IMC is expected to be fully operational by the first of November.

From latest reports, no jobs are expected to be lost, and there will be 750 on staff.  Those in London will be moved to new offices in west London, but those in Bristol will remain in their existing offices.

John Smith observed that BBC Magazines have built and maintained a high quality of journalism, and that BBC would be retaining a close relationship with the new owners.
