Gourmet Live magazine launches online

However, the publishers have now introduced the resurrected version of Gourmet, to be called Gourmet Live, with a website and iPhone app.  Reaction to this development is mixed, but with the entire print media under siege from ongoing technology, this may be the only way to preserve the Gourmet brand.

Chuck Townsend, chief executive of Conde Nast, said, “It’s not a magazine and it’s not a digital version of a magazine.  It’s a whole new way to engage with consumers.”  Mr. Townsend went on to say that he hopes Gourmet Live will appeal both to its many lifelong readers and to the younger, techo-savvy set.

He cited the strong response to the first digital issue of Wired magazine, which was downloaded at a cost of $4.99 by more than 90,000 users in the first month of its release.

The new application, to be released in the last quarter of this year, will initially depend mostly on archived material, but will also be connected with social networks like Facebook and Twitter, and will incorporate a real-time game engine.

Users will be able to share articles and compare favourites, and the game engine will connect with new content that can be downloaded free or for a small fee.  Future applications may include user reviews and recommendations.
