A new magazine has been launched inTurkey, aimed at devout Muslim women who want to look fashionable while adhering the rules of their religion. 31-year-old Ibrahim Burak Birer and his friend Mehmet Volkan Atay decided to create “Ala”, which means “the most beautiful of the beautiful” in Turkish, after he became angry at the increasing acceptance of nudity and alternative sexualities in his country, one of the most moderate Muslim nations.

Birer, who is himself a devout Muslim, had been particularly upset by a photo shoot of scantily-clad transsexuals in one ofTurkey’s most popular women’s magazines and decided that he would do something to provide an alternative for fashion-conscious Muslim women who also wanted to stay true to their faith.

All the models featured inAlaare pictured wearing clothing that is accepted by the Muslim religion, keeping most of the body and the head covered. Circulation figures have increased to around 30,000, with over 5,000 editions sent to subscribers abroad every month. The magazine’s success seem to have disproved the old theory about advertising that “sex sells”, one of Birer’s ambitions when he set up the business.

Birer added that all the western magazines, which are widely read in Turkey, feature photographs of women wearing clothing that is unsuitable for a Muslim country and that this influence was starting to affect Turkish society. He even hopes that some non-Muslim women, unhappy at the way that female bodies are portrayed in the media, will start to buy his magazine.

Alais especially popular among the Turkish migrant community inGermany, with over 1,000 copies of the magazine making their way north every month. Birer’s business partner told the newspaper Der Spiegel that the entrepreneurs are even considering producing their own German edition of the magazine if demand proves to be strong enough.

iPad owners can read the 200th edition of the popular computing publication PC Advisor for free – to celebrate the fact that the publishers have decided to finally launch an iPad version of the magazine.

The PC Advisor Magazine app is free to download itself, and the free issue is automatically downloaded too. After that, customers wanting to carry on subscribing to the publication will have to pay £2.49 per issue, or there are six-issue and twelve-issue deals priced at £14.59 and £19.99 respectively.

The monthly magazine includes features and reviews on the latest technology, as well as tips on how to get the best from your home computer or tablet and step-by-step tutorials for technophobes.

PC Advisor was first published by IDG almost 16 years ago and has built up a reputation in that time for delivering unbiased reviews of computer technology as well as clear and informative “how to” guides to help PC owners learn new skills, whether for home or small business use.

Now read by over 1.5 million people every month, PC Advisor is the most-read computer publication in the UK, an ideal purchase for those thinking of buying new PC equipment as well as those who want to find out just what their current computer is capable of. The popular review section doesn’t just cover PCs, but other hardware such as laptops and smartphones, printers and graphics cards, PC Advisor also reviews the latest software programs that are available for home computers.

This is not PC Advisor’s first foray into the world of iPad apps, however; the publishers have already launched their own range of apps offering hints and tips on technology problems such as TechTV, with its range of video tutorials, and Tech Help where subscribers can find solutions to common faults with their computers and other equipment.

Science magazine Chemistry World has undergone a revamp, with the changes appearing in the next issue of the publication on January 9.

Although all the popular features will still be included, some may have moved to different sections off the magazine, though the publishers of Chemistry World are confident that it won’t take long for readers to familiarise themselves with the new style. Regular articles, such as the Totally Synthetic and the Business Roundup, are still in their usual homes and the editors are keen for readers to give their feedback on the changes via Facebook and Twitter.

However, the biggest difference that readers will notice is that the publication is now being printed on glossy paper, in an effort to improve the look of the magazine and increase the quality of images and photographs; an essential part of any modern, professional publication.

The publishers of Chemistry Today have apparently been considering changes to the magazine for some time, and many of the suggestions were even more radical than changing the lay-out and the look of the publication. However, after weeks of discussions, the staff are happy with the new-look Chemistry World and felt that the New Year was the perfect time to make a new start.

As befits a magazine covering the latest scientific developments, Chemistry Today is also launching a number of technological innovation at the same time as the magazine itself is relaunched. After the success of the iPhone app last year, publishers have decided to go ahead with corresponding apps for other smartphones and for the iPad.

The app not only gives users access to the current issue of Chemistry World but the ability to search and read issues that are up to one year old. Subscribers can even set up the app so that their iPad or iPhone automatically downloads the newest edition when it becomes available, so readers can have their copy before it even hits the newsagent’s shelves.

If you’re interested in the Chemistry World app, make sure you get hold of it before April 1; until that date it is free to everyone, but afterwards access will be restricted to current subscribers and members of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Upcoming features in the magazine will include lots of reports from major chemistry events all over the world, which staff from the publication will be attending to report on the latest news from the scientific community. These include the ACS meetings in both spring and autumn, Analytica and the various International Symposia on Advancing the Chemical Sciences (ISACS) sessions held throughout the year.

One of the chemistry highlights is expected to be January’s 1st UK Solar to Fuels Symposium, which is being held in London and will be attended by several Chemistry World staff to make sure readers get all the news from this important conference.

Inspire is the magazine published by Al Qaeda and it was recently disclosed at a court hearing on Wednesday that a copy of the magazine managed to get inside Guantánamo prison. The disclosure was an embarrassment for the prison and it was revealed by a Navy Commander, Andrea Lockhart. The hearing was to discuss the setting up of a mail system inside the prison that would be more heavily scrutinised.

Officials from the prison want to change how the mail system works and they have been given a week to draft a control order for the court, who will decide whether they can go ahead. The judge deciding what will change is James Pohl.

There are currently over 170 people being held at the prison camps which were established 10 years ago by the Pentagon. There is an enormous staff at the facility amounting to around 1800 people. There is a librarian specifically tasked with censoring newspapers that come into the prison or anything that the staff deemed to be unsuitable for the inmates.

There has been no further information released about how the magazine managed to get into the prison and how the prison officers discovered it. The magazine was first released online two years ago and it was later published in print. An expert on the terrorist activities of Al Qaeda leader is Evan Kohlmann and he describes the breach of security as, “regrettable.”

Samir Khan was the initial editor of the magazine until he was killed in a missile strike on an Al Qaeda facility. Before he was killed he was only responsible for publishing seven editions of the magazine. The magazine is known for celebrating terrorist actions and regularly glorifies the events of September 11.

As well as being inspirational for potential terrorists it is also informative and at times instructional. The magazine promotes terrorism and encourages people to take up arms and conduct attacks on a civilian population for maximum casualties.

Mr Kohlmann commented, “The magazine has a little bit of everything in it. It glorifies attempted attacks on the United States and it offers supporting words for those terrorists being held by the US government. The actions of Al Qaeda’s leaders are glorified and it even contains instructions on how to make bombs. This encourages many people to become militants and carry out terrorist attacks without the need for excessive planning.”

The Lady is Britain’s oldest women’s weekly, founded by Thomas Gibson Bowles in 1885. Julia Budworth is his granddaughter and currently co-owner of the magazine, seventy-some years old and (you should pardon the expression) spitting tacks. But she does it so grandly and with such complete lack of apology that one can do nothing but admire her spirit.

The issue in question is, in two words, Rachel Johnson. Ms. Johnson, sister of London mayor Boris and with social connections in high places, was one of 21 women shortlisted for the position of editor at The Lady when it became apparent to everyone involved that the magazine was losing its appeal. Circulation was down from a high of 80,000 in its heyday to about a quarter of that, and Rachel Johnson got the job of putting The Lady back in the running.

Rachel’s ideas about how that should be done brought Julia to a rapid boil. Instead of how-to articles on knitting or preparing fresh grouse for the dining table, Rachel has offered a how-to on getting the nanny into bed, and a graphic account of her uncle’s gall-bladder surgery, amongst other un-Lady-like topics. The Lady’s cover has also featured some less-than-conservative figures such as Tracy Emin, (along with her views on masturbation), but that’s not really the problem, according to Julia.

That highly ruffled dignitary has told interviewers in no uncertain terms that Rachel Johnson is the wrong person for the job, always was the wrong person, and clearly is no lady. Just a few of the descriptive terms that apply are ‘penis-obsessed’, ‘vain and snobbish’, ‘social climber’ and ‘intolerably rude’. The last may be what clinches Julia’s professed disappointment and disgust with her editor, but then came the publication of Rachel’s A Diary of the Lady.

Rachel was an author and journalist prior to landing the position as editor at The Lady; she had no editorial experience at all. Her book is all about her first year on the job, and it is literally a blow-by-blow description of one episode after another, complete with serious name-dropping, making it quite a fun read if you’re interested in the scenes behind the scenes in the life of an elderly and struggling magazine. The author certainly pulls no punches, and just like Julia, she doesn’t apologize either.

Now it has been announced that Rachel is stepping down (or up, depending on your point of view) to a different position on the magazine, as editor-in-chief, while Matt Warren, previously of the Daily Mail, takes over as editor. Mr. Warren will be the third male to edit the magazine in its long history; his tenure might turn out to be very interesting also.

Ms. Johnson says the move was her decision; she wants to concentrate on writing books about her career and (incidentally perhaps?) “repositioning the brand”. Presumably that means she’ll continue trying to reach an audience younger than the previous average of 70-something, and probably continue to stir up the controversy that has made headlines for a publication that used to be known as the best source for ads if one were looking for a good nanny.

Instead of printing on paper the magazine is going to have a monthly digital publication.

The magazine was initially called Entrepreneur but it was forced to change its name under threat of legal action from a United States publishing house. The magazine has been in competition with Insider since it was created but after a few years of publication it became clear that EN had a focus on providing focused business news while Insider had too much advertising. Despite the comparative success of the magazine, factors outside its control are meaning it is having to change its format.

Stuart Anderson was the editor of the magazine but he recently resigned and many people think that the change in leadership is one of the reasons the magazine is changing to an online format. There are also the economic considerations as the price of printing is increasing, the magazine which has a particular presence in the north-west of the country has been particularly suffering because the magazine industry in this area performing particularly badly.

Martin Regan is currently heading the magazine and he said, “There is a definite demand in the market for business journalism and we want to have a focus on different regions so we are providing newspeople in specific areas, unfortunately though, the market is not ready to pay for this in print format and advertisers are just not willing to pay enough money for this to be possible. This, combined with the resignation of Mr Anderson, made us reconsider our strategy and realise that we cannot continue as we have been.

“We know that in the industry the cost of printing is going up while the amount advertisers are willing to pay is decreasing and if we are losing money by making a print publication and we are sure the others in the industry are as well, especially those in the North West of England where the publishing sector is in a particularly poor state. The problem with the magazine sector right now is that we are seeing a return to the 1980s were magazines were mostly about advertising which attached articles.

“The advertisers expected these articles to be simple so that readers would focus on their advertising and this happening again is a great step back for the industry. Despite the change we are having to make I would like to say how proud I am of the entire team at EN and the work that they have been doing for so many years.”

Mr Anderson was unavailable for comment but sources close to him had said that he intends to focus on a career outside of journalism. Mr Regan, who was once the editor of the magazine himself, said that there will not be any job losses because of the change in format. He continued, “All of our journalists were continuing their current positions and they will be just as busy creating the web magazine as they were when we were working in a print format.” The magazine is going to stop publishing its print edition in February and the team will focus solely on web efforts.

The scientists have suggested that scale should be printed next to the image to show how much the picture has been enhanced. This will allow readers of the magazine see how close the photograph is to reality.

Health organisations have recently voiced concerns about how photographs are being digitally enhanced to make models look slimmer, younger and generally more physically perfect. They have suggested that this leads people to have unrealistic body image expectations meaning that they might adopt unhealthy eating patterns. Some health organisations have even called the adjusting of images to be banned completely.

Erik Kee and Hany Farid computer professors at Dartmouth College in the United States and they have said that it is unrealistic to enforce a ban of magazines adjusting photographs. They suggest that a scoring system would alert readers to images that have had the most dramatic alterations. They proposed to scale the great pictures from 1 to 5 with a higher number suggesting a great deal of alteration has taken place.

They have developed a program that will assess images for changes to the hips, legs, and arms of a model as well as looking at enlargement of the eyes and elongation of the neck. It also assesses changes to skintone and how much wrinkles have been eradicated. Professor Farid has commented, “We take the original image as well as the altered one and put it into the program which will reverse engineer the changes and rate picture on a scale of 1 to 5. It is able to tell the difference between normal photo alterations, such as colour correction, and focus on just those which alter the figure of the model.”

In order to develop the rating system the scientists looked at nearly 500 photographs and the amount of editing that went into them. A group of volunteers was asked to rate each photograph to say which ones had had the most digital enhancement. The program was capable of rating the pictures in a very similar way to the humans and proved itself as a way for rating photographs that might be used in magazines. Their research stated, “We want consumers to be protected from having unrealistic expectations from magazines.”

In the trade adjusting photographs in this manner is known as ‘photoshopping’ after the popular Adobe editing program Photoshop. However the alteration of images has been around for much longer than the software from Adobe, in fact it has existed for around the same amount of time as photography itself.

In the past however the adjustments were made to photographs were much smaller and generally involved changes in light and contrast. Parts of images were overexposed in order to hide blemishes, today the process is much more complex and those who are the most skilled in retouching photographs can earn over $100,000 a year.

Her boyfriend, Vladislav Doronin is the publisher of several international titles and it has recently been announced that she would be writing a column in these magazines where she will interview people who are in the public eye. The situation was reversed just last year when she was interviewed for the magazine founded by Andy Warhol.

In the interview for the magazine she said, “Robert De Niro once told me that I should avoid being famous just for the sake of being famous and this is something that has stuck with me for a long time. I’m very lucky to be able to do what I love and I don’t have to work just so I can make money. I love what I do and I’m very grateful to be able to do it.” The new magazines will be being launched in late November in Russia and early next year in Germany.

This year it is celebrating a decade since its first publication at the shelves. The magazine was first established by Dawn Marie French, who is the editor of the magazine, in 2001. This was after she conducted extensive research into what people in the Yorkshire region wanted to read. She also experimented with different formats and eventually settled on publishing in the A5 size.

The magazine currently boasts over 15,000 subscribers and it is published three times a year. The cost of subscriptions the magazine is £10 in the UK as it is slightly more expensive if you are based in the EU. For those who want to subscribe to the magazine and are based in the rest of the world the charge is £40 a year

Despite this additional cost for those who are based outside the UK, it is estimated that around 30% of the readers in the magazine based abroad. Most of them are people from Yorkshire who have moved abroad but want to remain in touch with news from their original local area.

Initially the magazine focused on news and issues but since then it has moved into writing travel features as well as lifestyle writing. They have said that this is due to changing consumer demand. When the magazine was first launched it was intended that it be a middle ground between celebrity and fashion news as at the time there was no real magazine targeting this niche in the market.

Ms French has commented, “Initially when we started the magazine it was a bit of a risk but I’m very glad to see that it is paid off for us, we are currently enjoying a great subscriber base and it looks like this is going to continue to expand for many years to come.” The magazine also has celebrity interviews, restaurant recommendations, and information and news about fashions on the high street.

Official figures have shown that spending on these types of items is not falling despite massive cutbacks in the public sector.

Publicservice.co.uk has recently been told by the Ministry of Defence that it has reduced its spending by £200,000 this year. In the 2010 to 2011 period the organisation announced that it has spent nearly three quarters of a million pounds on journals and newspapers. Most of the money has been spent on magazines and periodicals with newspaper spending being just under £60,000. A spokesman from the Ministry of Defence has commented, “Spending on newspapers and magazines has fallen by around £200,000 compared with last year.

“These magazines that are subscribed to are required to deepen the knowledge of the people involved in government fields. They are kept for the Army library service, technical libraries, the defence’s medical service and also in recovery centres for personnel.”

The spokesman also said that now all departments within the Ministry of Defence are having to evaluate a need for different newspapers and periodicals on a yearly basis. David Lidington is the Foreign Office minister and he has recently said that the Foreign Office is spending even more than the Ministry of Defence, despite cutting spending by nearly 10%.

Every year it is estimated that the office spend over £2 million internationally on periodicals and newspapers. These figures will include electronics inscriptions. About the spending the minister recently commented, “We have partnered with other government departments so that we can benefit from greater purchasing power.”

Other government departments have recently reported that the amount they’ve been spending a magazines has been significantly cut. The children’s Minister has recently said that less than £70,000 a year is being spent on magazines and the business minister has said they are spending around £60,000. This is half of the amount of spending that was seen in the previous year.

One of the most dramatic reductions were seen at Defra were spending fell from £1.6 million to just over £300,000 in one year. A spokesperson from the Department has told publicservice.co.uk that the spending is high because of subscriptions online legal services and libraries. He commented, “Compared with other departments we have made significant cuts and the amount we’re spending is far lower than the previous government.
