The GQ iPad edition of the magazine sold 365 copies from the Apple App Store, which is considered to be very low sales, but the publisher of the magazine stated that there is no need for them to worry.
Publisher Conde Nast said that there was an increase in app sales at the launch of the iPad and iPad 3G with a total of 57,000 copies sold since its debut in December. Vice President and publisher of GQ, Paul Hunsinger, said that the ‘Men of the Year’ December issue earned a little over a million dollars in sales but due to the fact the iPad edition does not cost the magazine anything so in the future sales should increase.
He added, everything in terms of the iPad edition is profit and that he looks forward to the point when iPad issue sales become a much larger part of the magazine’s circulation.
Hunsinger added that he expects sales to increase quickly over the next few months starting with the upcoming June issue which will have Miranda Kerr featured on the cover.
The GQ application costs $2.99 from the App Store and includes the entire contents of the current issue with the option to purchase other older issues for $1.99 each. Both prices are lower than the newsstand price, which is $4.99 making the application much more attractive.
Before the Apple gadget was released, publishers already expressed in interest in the iPad stating that the device could open new revenues for sales, while the print business is exploring options to keep their readership high enough to contrast with the costs associated with print.
